Interleague roundup: Verlander comes within two outs of third no-hitter

Detroit 6, Pittsburgh 0: Justin Verlander came within two outs of his third no-hitter, allowing only Josh Harrison's ninth-inning single. Verlander (5-1), who struck out 12, got his sixth career shutout and 16th complete game. Miguel Cabrera and Prince Fielder hit back-to-back RBI doubles in the first, and Delmon Young homered in the fourth.
New York Yankees 4, Cincinnati 0: Andy Pettitte pitched eight shutout innings for his first regular-season win since July 2010. Pettitte (1-1), 39, making his second major league start since ending his one-year retirement, limited the young, free-swinging Reds to four hits, all singles.
Atlanta 5, Tampa Bay 3: Tommy Hanson pitched seven effective innings and Freddie Freeman drove in two runs for the Braves. Hanson (5-3) allowed two runs and six hits. Freeman had a run-scoring double, and Brian McCann hit an RBI single that put the Braves up 4-2 in the fifth.
Baltimore 2, Washington 1: Nick Markakis homered into the second deck in right field to give the Orioles a win in 11 innings. Markakis' blast helped Baltimore improve to 6-2 in extra innings, with all six victories coming on the road.
Philadelphia 6, Boston 4: Cole Hamels pitched seven strong innings, and Hunter Pence and Freddy Galvis homered to lead the Phillies to their sixth straight victory. Hamels (6-1) gave up three runs on six hits and struck out nine.
Miami 3, Cleveland 2: Carlos Zambrano pitched seven strong innings for the Marlins. Miami broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Hanley Ramirez. Zambrano (2-2) gave up four hits and two runs. He has a 1.96 ERA in eight starts.
Chicago White Sox 3, Chicago Cubs 2: Gordon Beckham hit a tie-breaking home run in the eighth inning and the White Sox overcame the loss of Paul Konerko, who was hit by a pitch.
Toronto 14, New York Mets 5: J.P. Arencibia and Rajai Davis each hit two homers, Yan Gomes hit his first career homer, and the Jays routed the Mets. Ricky Romero (5-1) won for the first time in three starts. He allowed one run in six innings.
Arizona 6, Kansas City 4: Miguel Montero piled up three RBIs, driving in the go-ahead runs with a double in the eighth inning. The Royals had pulled into a tie in the seventh.
Seattle 4, Colorado 0: Kevin Millwood tossed a two-hitter for his first shutout in nearly nine years and Mike Carp hit a solo homer, helping the Mariners snap a four-game skid.
Minnesota 11, Milwaukee 3: Scott Diamond (3-0) gave up a run in the first, ending a 14-inning scoreless streak, but won his third straight start. Josh Willingham hit a two-run homer for the Twins.
