Unheralded Abdul Matin of KGC raced to a two-stroke lead in the opening round of the bti International Golf Championship which teed off at the Kurmitola Golf Club yesterday.
Malek posted a four-under-par 68 in the 72-hole competition, to go two clear of the chasing pack which includes Bangladesh's most famous golfer Siddikur Rahman, Babu Ahmed and Sri Lanka's rising star Mithun Pererra, all of whom are on two-under-par 70.
The only other golfer to finish the first round under par is Liton Howlader with one-under while KGC's Jibon Ali and bti's Nazim Ali finished the day on par.
Apart from Mithun, no other participants from the other South Asian countries finished in the top ten while Rabi Khadka of Nepal came close with a fifteenth position finish with two-over-par.
Matin had a hiccup early in the day as he bogeyed on the second hole. But he bounced back superbly with a bogey in the next hole before managing three more birdies to end the front nine on 33. The back nine featured two more birdies and a bogey to yield a round of 35, taking his tally to four-under for the day.
Siddikur by contrast was more sedate as he divided his nines with two birdies and a bogey each to sign off at two-under. Babu Ahmed had a pretty good start with a two-under finish in the front nine but a back nine of 36 saw him drop to second position.
The best start of the day came from Mithun and Liton, with 32 at the front nine, but a 38 at the back nine for Mithun and a 39 at the back nine for Liton, set them off the pace.
A total of 65 professional golfers from hosts Bangladesh, India, Sri Lanka and Nepal are participating in the four-day event which is organized by Bangladesh Professional Golfers' Association and sponsored by Building Technology & Ideas Ltd.
