Ladakh clash: CO relieved of charge, unit to be disbanded

Army brawl: Col Kadam relieved of charge
NEW DELHI: Shaken by the violent clash between officers and jawans of an artillery regiment at Nyoma in eastern Ladakh, the Army on Saturday started a court of inquiry (CoI) into the breach of discipline and "relieved" the commanding officer of his charge.

The Army also began to "move back" the 226Field Artillery Regiment to its "permanent location" at Durbuk from the Mahe field firing range, where the brawl on Thursday evening had led to Colonel Prasad Kadam, Major A K Sharma and sepoy Suman Ghosh, among others, being hospitalized with fractures, bruises and other injuries.

Sources said Colonel Yatinder Nandal has been temporarily given the command of the artillery unit in place of Colonel Kadam.

The CoI, headed by a brigadier, will establish the chain of events and the "complicity" of the officers and jawans involved, who would then face a court-martial and dismissal from service. The 226 Field Regiment itself will be "disbanded" at a later stage, with the around 550 soldiers being posted to different units.

All this came amid defence minister A K Antony directing the Army to present a "detailed report".

Clash was an act of indiscipline, not a mutiny: Army

The Army on Saturday continued to maintain that the Ladakh clash on Thursday evening was "an isolated act of indiscipline", insisting it could "in no way be termed a mutiny". "Neither were any arms and ammunition used during the incident, nor did the jawans capture the armoury," said a senior officer.

The Army also denied that the stand-off was still in progress with the jawans, who got agitated after sepoy Suman Ghosh was mercilessly thrashed by young officers for daring to complain about the behaviour of a major's wife during the firing training camp at the Mahe ranges.

"The situation was defused on Friday itself after 3 Division commander Major General A L Chavan and the artillery brigade commander rushed to the spot and interacted with the troops," said the officer.

The startling free-for-all in the highly disciplined environs of the Army has sent shock waves down the ranks, with the episode being viewed as "a complete failure of command and control" in the unit.

Earlier, an extensive study conducted into the high suicide rate in the 1.13-million-strong Army by the Defence Institute of Psychological Research had held that "perceived humiliation and harassment" at the hands of their superiors often served as the final "trigger" for jawans to take their own lives.

Accept very few, most of the politicians are against any law which will deny them to get involve in any corrupt practices. In the same way the army authority will always be against any reform policy which will give natural justice to the PBORs because it will deny them in getting their illegal comfort by using the so called Sahayaks in their household personal works. Here Sahayak is only an example. There are so many other ways through which men and materials get misutilised in the name of discipline which need immediate remedial action. This is only possible if the common citizens raise their voice on this issue and the government get convinced.

Army still follows the rules made by Britishers for slave army. Officer of indian army not gentlemen like Britisher but are the basters and treat trained army soldiers worse than slaves. They force them to body massage, washing their and their wives undergarments and even sometimes for sex. If some body try to raise their voice then they will be charge sheeted and even court martial is done. Because there is no other body to whom they can complain get the solution but they have to go to the same or more worse scoundrel officer who can be the BAP OF THE OFFICER WHO COMMITTED THE OFFENCE. In this case also, all the officers will be set free and soldiers will be awarded exemplary punishment so that next time no soldier can dare to raise his voice against the wives of the army officer. The only solution to this is that all the enquiry must be done through the retired judge of high court and he must be attached to any hotel for accommodation and no officer should be allowed to see the enquiry judge. Now it is the time for jawans of indian army to follow MANGAL PANDEY and get rid of these mentally sick so called officer and their wives. There is no need to safe guard the nation to which our politician are already looting and majority of indian public is behaving like DEAD. JAI JAWAN JAI KISAN !,ARMY OFFICER MURDABAD MURDABAD.

Immediately stop the SaHayak System - it is barbaric and outdated. Jawans are "soldiers", not "servants". A Jawan joins the Indian Army to serve his country not some Officer's wife's whims and fancies. The Sahayak system should be immediately put to rest, how many "sahayaks" do officers in the US Army/Russian Army/Chinese Army(PLA) get ? ZERO. Why are Indian officers so spoiled ? Even CEO's of MNCs do not get company paid chauffeurs or housekeepers to cater to their whims and fancies! This kind of aristocratic attitude by Indian military officers is a very dangerous and denigrating thing for jawans who have "volunteered" to fight and prepared to die for this country.

Though I am a woman myself and I think the root cause of this problem is the ladies of Army Officers. I have observed that Army Officers remain busy in their duties and these ladies don't want to do any work as they use the orderlies detailed to aid the Army Officers for household work. In past I have seen many cases of spouses and children of Army Officers involved in Road rage incidents, car racing by daughters of Army Officers and killing innocent citizens in Chandigarh, driving cars under influence of alcohal and now in this incident too the wife of an officer is involved. IN MY OPINION THE ARMY AUTHORITIES SHOULD MAKE PROPER REGULATIONS & RULES TO CONTROL & MISUSE OF OUR PRECIOUS RESOURCES AND OUR ARMY CONSUTUBLARY FROM THESE MEMSAHABS

Just because these ladies think that there husbands are powerful and influential people and they can get away with any wrong doing these ladies dont hesitate in breaking any laws. personally these ladies are very arrogant and loudmouth in most of the cases as i have ever experienced. They think that a they are above law and so they are breaking traffic rules, rash driving , drunken driving etc. It is high time that these memsahabs should wake up and understand that they are just like other citizens. I respect/salute that you have slammed or crticize this shameful act of army wives.

Anju is right to large extent. Disband AWWA which has become a sourse of entertainment of ladies of senior Army Officers and is a drain on the available resources. Manpower is being misused by AWWA. Moreover it has become a commercial organisation and has lost its direction. Army Officers wives feel like a fish out of water when Sahayak does not come. Misuse of Sahayaks by ladies must be stopped. Recently there was a case in Jammu region where a Commanding Officer's wife misbehaved with service driver resulting an outrageous incident. Let ladies stop using soldiers as DOG keepers.

There was a time when army was a way of life. Over decades, the ruling dispensation spared no effort in reducing the sword arm by ignorance, interference and corruption to just another job. A man in uniform is not immune from the influences in society. He is one of us. Is it any surprise that a failure of leadership occurred.

The Indian army has continued too long with it's colonial hangover. The officers of today must stop behaving like the Gora sahibs of the past. The Indian society has matured and moved ahead, even the Indian caste system which was centuries older and more firmly rooted than the "Gora saheb- native sepoy" system has collapsed for good. The army must ensure that it treats all men and women in uniform with respect and dignity. A soldier irrespective whether he is a jawaan, a JCO or an officer can only fight for the dignity and pride of the motherland if he and his family lead a life of dignity and respect in the times of peace.

I had an opportunity to serve in the Army as a SSC officer 35 years ago and i left my dream career in sheer disgust of having to serve with a bunch of egoistic and self-centered officers. It is a surprise to me that it had taken so many decades for this mutiny to happen. While the nation tries to give its best in terms of pay and perks to all defence staffs and all Indians recognize and respect the supreme sacrifice men in uniform are expected to make in the face of any adversity, many Officers instead of serving the country as a matter of pride and with gratitude for generous perks they get, they indulge in variety of immoral and disgraceful activities. As a routine, they make absurd comparisons with accomplished professionals in different fields in civil life. Except for a fraction of officers serving in the technical areas, most of the army officers have very poor academic or professional qualifications. Today, many jawans are well educated and unfortunately and due to scarcity of jobs are compelled to join services, where they are made to perform menial jobs like polishing the shoes, washing undergarments (of all members of the officers house), clean toilets, change nappies, accompany their children to and fro from school, serve guests at home and be a bartender, or an aide to the ‘memsahib’ etc., In order train and maintain a soldier, the government spends as much as a minimum of 50 – 100k per month appx and these trained soldiers are humiliated and exploited as domestic helps at ‘sahibs’ residences. Is it not inhuman and a national waste? While there is no concept of ‘orderly’ in western defense services, where professional commitment and ethos are valued at every level (from a Soldier to a General) , it is ridiculous that Indian army is following a system, which is discontinued even by Pakistan Army, where feudal setup is still prevalent in all institutions. Whenever the government initiated a discussion about abolition of this practice, army officers gave vague explanations and carefully ensured its continuance till date. Officers are rated by their ability to provide soldiers to work as domestic helps at the residences of senior officers, which is very important for their promotions and postings. By a conservative estimate, on an average 30 % of the soldiers present on rolls at any time, work only for the personal comforts of the Officers and their family. With 30% men accounted for training and leave etc, leaving only 40% of the fighting machinery for national security. I think the Government and Military should wake up atleast now…,

It is heartening to see peoples’ concern for the army and heart breaking to learn how little some of them know about the military way of life. Yes the British, when they were the rulers of this land felt lordly enough to have a combatant 'orderly', to attend to his professional bearing and to carry his radio set in battle. The British, in peace locations also had their 'valet’, who was a non-combatant and was paid his salary by the officer. The officers with families used to stay in huge bungalows having servants quarters to house a retinue of maids , the cook, the bearer, the ‘saayis’ (horse attendant) etc who were all paid by the officers themselves. Some of these were even given their pensions by the officer from his post retirement emoluments. Sir Churchill sent pension to his valet in Pune till latter’s death. Our officers in post independent era retained only the ‘orderly’ and the bungalows with a maid or two paid from their pockets. Unfortunately, the ‘orderly’, now known as ‘sahayak’ has been misused by the officers, their wives and even their children to do many a household chores. Some officers even boasting of having more than one. The issue in this incident was not of ‘sahayak’ but that of sacrilege by officers of operational training which is considered a very confidential and special to the unit’s personnel. The wives presence was a breach of that practice. The young women’s presence at such an intense atmosphere definitely was a source of uncontrollable distraction to others who were perhaps away from their wives for long a time. This, a leader called officer, must be very careful about. Having failed in this OLQ the situation became irretrievable when the young irresponsible officers physically assaulted the ‘jawan’ and then their CO who tried to put the derailment on proper track. It is this issue which is of utmost worry and concern.

If Air Force or Naval Officers can maintain their far complicated n white/sky blue uniform, why these OG basterd can't maintain one and why they need a trained fighting soldiar as Sahayak (Ghoolam). Things are far more worse than this but how long these can be supressed ? Wait india, if the system is corrected, A LOT OF MANGAL PANDEY ARE ON THE WAY. Unfortunately our so called patriotic n educated officers r exploiting our own countrymen to b their personal slaves. Such system does not exist in the defense forces of the developed countries . The jawans r recruited to serve the nation not the snobby wives n kids of these officers.

To avoid such GOI should implement a system where in everyone is recruited as a solider first and given the lowest rank, then serve 1 year on that rank then give the further give internal tests based on their ability to prove their mettle if they are the grade of leaders or followers not to be the grade of Officers or Servants.

This is not the first time such an incident has happened. There should be an inquiry into the event even if there was some misbehaviour on the part of the jawan he should not have been beaten, there are disciplinary procedures for such misdemeanours. Now what has happended is that bad blood has been created between officers and jawans of this regiment and it will linger and cause more problems in the future. It seems very unlikely that a jawan got provoked without reason and reacted rudely to an officers wife, there must have been some reason.

Interference in official matters by wives of Army Officers is a serious concern and required immediate intervention by enforcing effective law and its implimentation to be prevent such incidents in all levels. Stop sahayak system though the Officers are not authorised to have them so. Jawans are serving in the extreame climate and situations with bare minimum facility to save their life so safe guard the nation. The officers and their wives to forget the past, the colonialism as the minimum qualification for the entry in to the Army is 10th Pass with 50% mark, if I'm not wrong. The people joint in the Army basically from village back ground and to support their family from financial hardship and unable to study further because of different social reasons but not they are incapable of thinking and nonprogressive. Boarders to be enforced by providing proper bunker with central heating and ventilation facility to sleep well after their duty. Soldiers are trained to withstand any circumstances for 3 days ie 72 hrs. On ground they have been misused by using them long standoff as the people are taken off for personal affairs like gardening, housekeeping etc.of the officers. This information is not new but every one is keeping silent to pass their command or time. I request the TOI to plug the issues of the soldiers in the Army.

The organization has become rotten and now that the public is abusing them openly for this latest disgrace we have people like you asking us to keep quiet and let the shameful deeds continue without comment. Sorry, that time has passed, today the Army is under an intense spot light and unlike the previous decades today the Army is answerable to the people of this country - you can't do whatever you want and then say it is an "isolated" incident. There is a tendency within the Army to punish jawans harshly but officers are punished lightly. What a load of nonsense MSB! Subjective assessments based on class consciousness have been proven wrong too many times by history for me to bother repudiating that misbegotten theory here. The young officers of today work just as hard, have the same sense of honor and pride and produce the same level of competent results in a far more technically and administratively challenging environment today than you might have imagined you did in 'your time'. I too am a retired Armed Forces officer and I find your kind of arguments foul and disparaging of those who are doing a great job in the face of daily challenges! If you wish to put forward criticism at least take the trouble to look at reality first! This particular incident is the result of micro-mismanagement and is by no means the 'norm'. The Army is dealing with the issue and will find an appropriate antidote for such aberrations in a short while. It is indeed sad to see the Army in such poor media limelight, but at least the issues are being brought to the fore and dealt with. That's way better than most of the "civil" institutions which hush up and endlessly perpetuate their ills.

The fight between Commissioned Officers & Person Below Officers Ranks (PBORs) in the unit of Indian Army is a tip of ice berg. The Indian Armed Forces are ruled by elites rather more properly it can be said that ruled by black Angrez i.e Commissioned Officers. Almost every Indian must have witnessed that from the time India got independence, Indian Armed Forces has been facing shortage of Commissioned Officers despite having lucrative pay, perks, salaries and honor whereas it has no any shortage of PBORs but PBORs are always surplus in the Armed Forces of India. It is mainly, because 70-80% educated youths of rural India faces serious hardships in getting jobs after their schooling or graduation from a low profile school, college or university as the rural masses have no money to bye costly degree or diplomas from Education malls. Hence, rural youths having rich culture and ideology turns towards Indian Armed Forces to earn a living and thus compelled to join the Indian forces as PBORs. Since, the Indian Armed forces modeled on the British system. Hence, Commissioned Officers mostly comes from elite family goes on exploiting the PBORs on the name of maintaining discipline in the Armed Forces and carry out gruesome murders of human rights of PBORs as their entire Fundamental rights remains suspended till they remain in uniform and in absence of no service rule for the PBORs, the Commissioned officers of the Armed Forces mostly treat the PBORs as Animal being. If Govt of India really wishes to have a sound Armed forces then the Govt must come out with white paper on the issue. And, any patchwork in this respect would only worsen the situation. The corruption of Cofin, Ration, Lands, Aadarsh Society and purchase in all other defence items sufficiently discloses that the Commissioned officers of the Armed Forces not only commits Corruptions of Money & materials but commits serious corruption of mis management of PBORs.

In which age are you living. The officer class of todays army is not elitist at all. Gone are those days. Today most indian army officers come from Govt schools, rural or lower middle class background. In fact in plces like NDA special coaching is given to them just to speak and understand english. NoSir the middle class and elitist are today IT, finance, corporate officials businessmen and professionals. In today's Indian army the officer class is from same social background as a common soldier

sorry bro......... wake up to the reality... majority officers are from Defence background and others who come from the normal background are molded into a Britisher in the training center itself they don't know how to treat their jawans... they treat them like slaves.. that's the reality.... there are atleast 2 or 3 such officers out of 10

Rightly said but you missed out two most prominent and conspicuous categories of the elite - politicians and the bureaucrats. They hail from princely families or the neo-dalit monarchs (Mayawati and the like). How many cases have you heard lately of any of their kith and kin joining the Indian Army? People are not joining Army as officers because of the hardships and kind of life and job prospects for growth. Even a clerical job will more than score over the so-called outwardly visible benefits of Army officers. News channels talk of crorepati clerks in India. So no comparison should be drawn since army life these days no-where comes close to the glory, affluence and immunity of civilian jobs. Alongwith the officers their families also bear the brunt in terms of quality of education for children and the frequent disruptions and moves every one and half year.

Diwakar is right. Indian armed forces are governed by black angrez.I spent alsmot 6 years with Indian army as an outsider where I freely interacted with officers and jawans. When asked officers - why you put a jawan on sahayaks duty. The answer was this way you ensure that he follows officers orders else, they will not. Also why Army do not recruit people at JCO level? this will ensure officers shortfall is filled but it will not. Because then those Commissioned officers have to behave properly and their man-maani may be questioned. This army has to change and has to become Indian aam aadmi's army otherwise we'll see types of Deepak Kapoors and such incidents more and more.

please join indian army if you have some guts to give gevery thing and get nothing in return other than the false pride in the uniform which people like you try to tarnish by your shallow knowledge so there is basically nothing left in the profession any more. We still have a volunteer army with hardly any subscribers to it. the academy going vacant. should be made compulsory for Experts like you
