Muggers shot and wounded an employee of a wholesale shop in broad daylight yesterday and took away Tk 10.60 lakh from him in the capital's Jatrabari.
Abul Hossain, 36, staff of M/s Abul Khair Traders, was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) with bullet wounds in his right thigh.
The victim told reporters at DMCH that three armed miscreants intercepted him and two of his companions -- another Abul Hossain and Arshed Ali, son-in-law of his employer -- when they were going on foot to deposit the money in a bank around 1:00pm.
The miscreants tried to snatch the bag of money from the victim and when he resisted one of the muggers shot him in the leg, said Abul Hossain.
When the miscreants fled from the spot on two motorcycles there appeared their another accomplice, who was not in the scene until then, witnesses said.
Owner of the shop Abul Khair told The Daily Star that the money was wrapped in a plastic bag inside a handbag but still the muggers knew about it.
He alleged that the mugging was planned. Khair said he thinks these were the same criminals who looted over Tk 25 lakh from his shop in February in 2009.
At that time, Abul's elder brother Moqbul Hossain sustained bullet injury. Jatrabari police arrested five accused in that incident.
Kahir said Manik and his accomplices, who were arrested in connection to the looting, are out on bail and have been threatening him to withdraw the case against them.
He fears the miscreants may again cause problems for them.
None were arrested in this connection, said Mazharul Islam, officer-in-charge of Jatrabari Police Station.
