Dhaka, May 3 (bdnews24.com) – Raising a collective voice against shutdowns, the leaders of Bangladesh's apex business body FBCCI have demanded enactment of a law banning hartal or general strike which they termed a 'destructive programme' affecting the country's economic development and political stability.
Leaders of the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industries (FBCCI) made the call from a meeting of its governing council at the FBCCI building in the city's Motijheel on Thursday.
The meeting was organised to discuss the situation in the wake of a series of general strikes that crippled trade and life across the country.
The FBCCI urged the political parties having representatives in parliament to enact a law to this effect.
The demand came a day after the present and some of the former FBCCI presidents held a closed-door meeting at the city's Westin Hotel on Wednesday to discuss the country's political scenario.
After the FBCCI governing council meeting on Thursday, its president A K azad told reporters: "We want that a law is formulated with the participation of all to ban hartal for good."
Stating that the country's economic development and investment was being hampered due to the political instability, he said, "We would meet the prime minister and the leader of the opposition, if necessary."
On the meeting, Azad said that the council members prepared a set of proposals to ensure that the country's economic and political health looked up.
"The proposals include moving the court, holding meeting with professionals and taking out silent processions," he added.
Azad also said that a work plan would be prepared soon on the basis of the proposals after meeting former presidents of the apex trade body.
