US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton yesterday said the water sharing issue between India and Bangladesh should be solved amicably as the issue will become contentious across the globe.
“This is certainly on the list of things that I would want to talk about,” Clinton earlier said in an interactive session with NDTV in Kolkata, when asked whether she would include sharing of Teesta water with Bangladesh in her talks with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
The United States had no interest in how the water sharing pact was arrived at, it only wanted the issue to be amicably resolved because the issue will become hot in the future, she said.
"Water is an issue that will increasingly become contentious," Clinton said.
"The alternative will be perhaps a conflict which will lead to dislocation, refugee problems and destabilisation that we are now seeing in places in North Africa. We have to work together," she said.
However, Mamata said the issue was not raised in Clinton's 52-minute talk with her in Kolkata yesterday morning.
Sharing of Teesta water has become a bone of contention between Bangladesh and India with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressing reservations over the quantum of water to be given to Bangladesh.
The West Bengal chief minister had opposed the quantum of water the federal Indian government had agreed to give Bangladesh as part of the Teesta water pact.
Mamata has also formed a committee headed by noted hydrologist Kalyan Rudra to suggest the quantum of water that West Bengal could give without affecting the interests of farmers of the state.
